Summer vibes are in the air which means people are getting antsy to enjoy their freedom and popsicles or a cold beer. San Antonio has plenty to offer but if you’re feeling a wanderlust itch to get out of the city and do some exploring here are some day trips worth driving to! From hiking, kayaking, tubing, barbecue, swimming
New Braunfels, TX
Schlitterbahn. Just think about it: hardcore water slides (i.e., the Master Blaster), Dippin' Dots, and BYOB? Anywhere you can surf man-made waves, eat astronaut food, and drink store-bought beer is A++ in our book.
Canyon Lake, TX
Bring a tent and a cooler and stay a while. Canyon Lake is crowded this time of year but it’s worth fighting through the Texas State party students. Overlook Park might be the best place in Texas to watch the sunset -- and that’s really saying something.
San Marcos, TX
Summertime blues calls for a trip toobin' down the river with a cold beer in hand!. After a beer run, swing by the Lions Club, where you can rent tubes and catch a shuttle to and from the San Marcos River.
No longer a secret, Lockhart is widely known as home to the best barbecue in the United States of America. If you’re reading this and have never been to Black’s Barbecue, you need to jump in your car and pay the place an overdue visit.
If you're looking for a good workout, clib to the summit of Enchanted Rock and check out the view from the top! 20 miles south, Fredericksburg is the perfect little town to explore. It has antiques, german food, and a collection of older stores to explore.
Shiner beer is as Texan as cowboy boots and bluebonnet flowers. Take the hour-and-a-half drive down I-10 and 183 and get educated by taking a tour of Shiner’s facilities.
Corpus Chrisit, TX
Corpus Christi is the perfect spot if you're looking for some weekend diversity. There's the famous Port Aransas beach where you'll find the average spring breaker and family duo posted up blaring music and sippin sweet tea or beer. You can also take a trip more inland and visit the aquarium, dude ranches, and National Museum of the Pacific War.
Krause Springs & Hamilton Pool
Beat the heat is by heading 90 miles north to one of the most treasured swimming holes in Texas — Krause Springs. The gin-clear waters, just down the road from Willie Nelson’s rancho deluxe, provide the perfect place to reconnect with nature, make some new (old) hippie friends, and float around in the not-so-hot water. In fact, the spring holds constant at about 68 degrees Fahrenheit. In other words? Heaven on a hot Texas summer day. If you want to make it a two-for-one day trip, about 30 miles down the road (we suggest stopping at Opie’s BBQ on your way out of Krause Springs) lies another Texas swimming hole gem, Hamilton Pool. A hidden grotto once revered by Native Americans, the pool sports a 50-foot waterfall and plentiful shade.
Texas Hill Country Wine Trail
One of the more popular attractions for a bachelorette or birthday party, the trail, boasting 12 wineries along Highway 290 between Fredericksburg and Johnson City, offers vineyard views, tasty wines, and friendly folk — hey, its 5 o’clock somewhere! With prices ranging from $5-$12, one can generally taste five to six wines per vineyard. Not a bad deal considering the trail is known for fabulous customer service and some honest-to-God good wine.
And of course…Austin, TX
Austin is San Antonio’s playground. How many times have you heard a coworker mention Austin in their weekend plans? Probably daily. Whenever you need a break from SA -- Austin is calling your name. Whether it’s a run around Town Lake, a visit to East Sixth, or a tour of delicious margaritas, ATX, like a reliable uncle, is there to lend a helping hand.
