The summer months are coming whether you’re ready or not. But let’s get real, you’re not thinking about swimming pools, sunshine, and bathings suits, you’re thinking about that heating & cooling bill that we all know is about to be a headache. Heating and cooling statistically accounts for more than half of the energy in a U.S. home proving that it is the largest energy expense for most homes. SO what can you do to prepare? Here are some tips for saving some dollars on your energy bill!

-Actually unplug those accessories and appliances that are not in use. Many people are unaware of how many electric items in their house (use) energy 24 hours a day just because they’re plugged in.

-When it comes to washing machines and dishwashers: they use the same water and energy whether your loads are full or not, so pack that puppy up!

-Use cold water and skip the “dry” cycle on your dishwasher

-If your neighborhood allows it, use clothes line as your dryer

-Also run your load closer to the evening time when it starts to cool down in order to avoid extra heat in your home

-Keep your house closed tight during the day, avoid letting in unwanted heat and humidity

-Ventilate your home naturally with ceiling fans and crack a window open at night time.

-You might want to consider buying a high efficiency air conditioner and seal all of your air conditioner ducts

-Keep the thermostat set at 78 degrees F or higher if you’re using ceiling fans, don’t air condition unused rooms.
